Book a weekly workshop
In Term 3, young people will lead the creation of a brand new performance from scratch, and present it in The Brunswick Mechanics Theatre, a professional venue, thanks to the generous support of Next Wave.
This term involves 9 weekly workshops every Thursday afternoon/evening from the 24th of July to the 18th of September at Balam Balam Place.
Kids: 4.15 - 5.45 pm (8-12 year olds)
Teens: 6.00-7.30pm (12-18 year olds)
The end of term performance will take place at The Brunswick Mechanics in the evening on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th of September.
The final class of the term (18th of September) will involve a private party for all the young people involved at Balam Balam Place, where we will reflect on and celebrate the works created.

UNDERARTS is a dynamic, creative space where bold ideas take shape through collaboration and creative risk taking. Each session is fast-paced and fun - filled with theatre games, improvisation, and the chance to develop original scenes, characters, and concepts from scratch.
Every voice counts. Young people are encouraged to contribute in ways that excite them - whether that’s performing, writing, designing sets and costumes, working with lights and sound, or shaping the overall creative vision.
All of this creative exploration builds towards a professional presentation, where the ideas developed throughout the term are realised in a fully staged, public performance.
This process reflects UNDERARTS' core belief: that the creative ideas of young people are powerful, important, and deserve to be taken seriously - as genuine contributions to Melbourne’s contemporary performance scene.
It’s a chance to dive into the full creative process, try new things, and be part of something totally original - made together, from the ground up, in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Our weekly classes are led by UNDERARTS founders Anna McCarthy and Allison Wiltshire, who bring nearly 20 years of professional theatre experience. Each term, a guest professional theatre maker will join us to lead a workshop inspired by their own artistic practice. In 2025, we’re excited to welcome some of Melbourne’s most acclaimed artists, including Sarah Aiken, Zoey Dawson, Susie Dee, Ash Flanders, and Stephen Nicolazzo.
